Chime Time is an immersive tactile, auditory, and visual environment by artist and designer Jillian Mayer. In a spirit similar to her sculptures known as Slumpies (which are built for smartphone users to comfortably be on their devices in both real and invented positions), Mayer’s installation encourages interaction: Visitors are invited to walk through color-filled spaces and play musical chimes that are integrated into the spatial design. The positive, haptic feedback reinforces the idea that it is okay to ‘touch the art,’ yielding pleasant sounds that echo through radiant, multicolored halls and chambers. Chime Time expands the potential of sculpture beyond object into environment, and visually-privileged art viewing into an embodied sensory experience.
